Summer’s gone! But we say, “So what?!” Anyone who, when the word autumn is mentioned, sees a grey, fog-shrouded still life in their mind’s eye, has probably never experienced this special time of year in Sexten or the Tre Cime di Lavaredo holiday region. Of course there is autumn weather here with puddles, Dolomite summits lost in cloud and a desire for the tried and tested combo of hot tea and woolly socks. But that’s not all! Put another way: normally the instagrammable days are in the majority. The kind of days with orange and red flaming larch forests under perfect bright blue skies. And with summit sunrises that it is no longer necessary to get up in the middle of the night to experience. Days with perfect temperatures for exploring the mountains. And with high-definition views into the distance. Yes, autumn in the mountains really cannot be underestimated! This is the time when things start to quieten down on what are otherwise often busy hiking trails. And it somehow seems more personal, more sociable. In the refuge huts and down in the valley there’s suddenly more time for a natter. The cows have long been back down in the valley, the meadows and fields have been mown, the hay is stowed in the barns, and hectic, hard-working landlords can treat themselves to a well-deserved breather. However some continue to offer delicious meals and the mountain railways also keep running. Perfect, don’t you think? www.dreizinnen.com/goldendolomites
