As long ago as the 1930s, the renowned architect, Professor Clemens Holzmeister, came to Sexten and set new architectural standards, making the mountain village well known in architectural circles in the process. The affinity of the Sexten natives for good, sustainable architecture has remained – with, for example, the “New Building in the Alps” architecture prize being held here. The architectural aspirations were correspondingly high in the public call for submissions in the competition for the HAUS DER BERGE. Five internationally renowned architectural practices with clear ties to South Tyrol were invited to take part in the planning competition in 2016, with the tower design by ‘delueg architekten’ ultimately being declared the winner. The groundbreaking for the HAUS DER BERGE took place in May 2022. In keeping with the principle of sustainability, only wood from Sexten’s forests was used for construction – spruce and larches that fell victim to storm Vaia in autumn 2018.
“Its striking position on the main highway and its towering form give the impression of a finger pointing far into the Sexten landscape. In its precisely chosen location, the building communicates with travellers and visitors in both directions through the course of the valley. The new building appears substantial and long-lasting, made from solid timber from the surrounding forests and built by local craftsmen. The interior of the four-storey building is characterised by the use throughout of spruce and larch wood. A look-out room on the roof and various views from the inside emphasise the conscious experiencing of the unique landscape and the unmistakeable mountains of Sexten.”
