An alpinist, a journeyman mason and a huntsman. Summit pioneers and trendsetters in alpinism in the Sexten Dolomites. In 1869 within just one month the unusual threesome conquered first what had until then been considered to be the unassailable Punta dei Tre Scarperi – the highest summit in the range – the Sassolungo and then the Cima Grande. It was Grohmann, who had come with the firm intention of making an illustrious first ascent in the Dolomites. An interesting detail: He had caught sight of the striking rock formation of the Sexten Dolomites from the Kitzsteinhorn in Salzburg Land and soon ascertained that no records of it had ever been logged. This gave him the firm plan of going down in history as the conqueror of the pale pinnacles and ridges. He selected Innerkofler and Salcher after they were recommended to him as true and experienced mountain guides. A genuine stroke of luck! Their spectacular first ascents are today considered to be an important milestone for the start of alpinism in the Sexten Dolomites.
